Pro-poor water supply
“One out of three people worldwide have no access to safe drinking water. In the last decades, many water infrastructure projects took place in Africa, but 15-30% broke already down after one year.”

With the establishment of Sustainable Development Goal 6 in 2015, the required increase in access to safe drinking water still gets plenty of attention in the WASH sector. With this goal in mind many organisations are focussing on the construction of new infrastructure and ensuring inclusive access for previously ignored minorities and other vulnerable groups affected by climate change, wars and disasters. In this endeavour, experiences from the past seem to be overlooked. Weak management practices, insufficient financial means to cover recurrent costs, poor planning, siting and construction are the real causes of inadequate access.
PRACTICA believes that the most vulnerable are truly supported if technical capacity and financial sustainability is guaranteed on the long term. PRACTICA therefore aims to close the water service gap in rural and peri-urban low-income areas by building capacity of governments and WASH actors to establish technically flexible, financially viable and affordable water services.
PRACTICA focuses on three key innovations for intervention:
- Financial SMART life cycle planning & monitoring – Asset Management Tools
- Flexible, modular design to lower costs and maintenance – Modular Piped Water Systems
- Affordable cost recovery mechanisms – TokenTap mechanical pre-paid systems
