Asset Management Tools
Financial SMART life cycle planning & monitoring
“The number one mistake in water supply projects is solely considering the capital investment costs of putting a water system in place.”
We believe every intervention, whether it concerns an existing water point or a new construction, should include a SMART life cycle analysis of all assets and associated costs over their lifecycle. This analysis includes:
1) a Specific inventory of all assets;
2) a Measurable set of risks of asset failure and their consequences;
3) an Agreed set of Service Level indicators for both water quantity, quality, reliability and accessibility by all relevant stakeholders involved;
4) a Realistic water tariff that will ensure cost recovery;
5) a Time-bound plan for repairs and replacements, and income generation.
Our Asset Management Tools support (private) water system operators, local decision-makers (like water user committees), water utilities, and government institutions to manage their systems well by setting up a plan that is financially viable and can be easily monitored and adjusted during its lifespan. It is not a copy of available Western high-tech software solutions but tailored to the requirements of WASH actors in rural and peri-urban settings in the global South.
Our tools are open source, but their successful rollout depends on a proper introduction. We offer services to tailor the tools to local circumstances and build the capacity of stakeholders to use them. We also conduct detailed financial modeling and analyse business cases of WASH sector organisations planning to construct new water schemes or rehabilitate existing ones.
The digitization of Asset Management Tools takes place as part of our role in the WASH Alliance International (www.wash-alliance.org), together with other partners from this Alliance (Simavi, RAIN, CIUD and Lumanti). Click here to read the blog on this subject!
