Low-cost water and sanitation in northern Madagascar
PRACTICA and UNICEF conducted a study for the Malagasy government on the development of low-cost water and sanitation technologies in the Sava, Diana and Sofia regions. The results indicated a favourable zoning by region for low-cost technologies. A borehole with hand pump fitted in 44% in the Diana region and 61% in the Sava region. Furthermore, a number of pilot projects on rota sludge and well jetting to construct boreholes have proven that access to drinking water in rural areas could increase significantly in a short time.
