Technical support to MEDAIR on project “RANO VELO”
The Great South of Madagascar is renowned for its chronic vulnerability to droughts, with less than 400 mm precipitation per year and high levels of malnutrition. Currently, a humanitarian crisis continues,
affecting more than 1.6 million people. Despite all the efforts made up until now, recent indicators of
food security (October 2017) indicate that the seven districts of the Madagascan Great South are stagnating, which means that 744,831 people live in very pronounced food insecurity. In addition to the security crisis
South Madagascar is suffering from the effects of climate change, which have worsened during the
last ten years.
The rate of access to drinking water is very low in the regions of the Great South (Androy, Anosy and Atsimo Andrefana), where it is still below 40% according to the last data (Ministry of Water, Energy and Hydrocarbons, 2017). This situation stems from the lack of infrastructure and the ineffectiveness of the management models in place.
MEDAIR plans to implement a 12-month integrated water, sanitation and hygiene project in the
rural commune of Marolinta, in the district of Beloha. This commune is one of the ten communes of
Madagascar most affected by drought for 15 years. Through this project, MEDAIR intends to develop
sustainable access to water in the Municipality of Marolinta by building or renovating 29 points
in 14 different villages.
It is planned to realise modern water points by the technique of mechanical or manual drilling. MEDAIR
wish to develop solar power for the supply of several of these water points, set up a method of
innovative management and build the capacity of local entrepreneurs.
